Shopping
in a Pinch for a Unique Baseball Gift
Now you have heard a
lot from me over the months and years with baseball
tips, articles, tidbits of information, instruction,
and an occasional sales pitch for an item or two.
My wonderful wife,
Laura, has been a big inspiration to me behind the
scenes…not to mention helping me with my writing
style, etc.
She has been working
diligently on a project to connect with all you
sportsmoms and parents out there. More on that
later.
This is the first of,
I hope, many tips and insights from her. Look for
more information, instruction, and inspiration for
parents (I guess you young BioForce athletes can
look too) in coming weeks on the website.
For now, Laura wants
to share a little holiday shopping idea for you
baseball fanatics…
Thanks,

For all you
BioForce Faithful Holiday shoppers…
I wonder if I’ll find
myself standing in a long line at the bookstore
again this Christmas Eve. I’ve found myself there so
many times over the years that it has almost become
a tradition for me. Christmas just wouldn’t be the
same if I didn’t spend time searching for a newly
published book for the baseball fans in my family.
And I’ve found that, after a few years, they all
start to look the same.
What to get the
baseball and sports fan….hhmmm. A magazine…done
that. The latest biography on a famous player or a
book filled with major league baseball stadium
photographs…yep, bought those too. How about some
trading cards to stuff the stocking? Tried that.
If you are like me
and would like to find something that connects more
closely with the baseball experience, I’ve got an
incredible book recommendation for you. And you
won’t even have to stand in line. I know, I know,
you are thinking that my kids, or my husband, don’t
read much. But I’ve got something that they will
have a hard time putting down.
My husband and I
recently ran across a book written by Christy
Mathewson and originally published in 1912. I have
to admit that until this year, I didn’t know
anything about him. As it turns out, he was quite a
pitcher and an accomplished writer as well.
Pitching in a Pinch
or “Baseball from the Inside” is an easy read filled
with stories about playing baseball in the Big
Leagues just after the turn of the twentieth
century. The cool thing is that, as different as
things were back then, much of the game of baseball
has remained the same. Getting to see the game from
the inside is entertaining, and the insight into the
mind of a baseball player is an interesting
perspective for me, a mom and longtime spectator of
the game.
Mathewson teaches us
about honest and dishonest sign stealing, the rigors
of spring training, jinxes and what they mean to a
ball-player, coaching–good and bad, umpires and
close decisions, and big league pitchers and their
peculiarities. Readers will recognize famous Hall of
Fame baseball names like Honus Wagner, Connie Mack,
and Ty Cobb. Christy gives us an insight on how he
got Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner out. And they will
learn where expressions like “stepping in the
bucket” came from, why pitchers started to use
rosin, why the infield players started to throw the
ball around, and where “the most important ninety
feet in baseball” are.
There’s something in
this book for every baseball fan. If you would like
to avoid the bookstore lines this holiday season,
just
click on this link to order your copy:
This fun book is a
304-page, spiral-bound, paperback reprint of the
original publication. You are probably thinking that
304 pages is a lot to read and you don’t have time
for that. It is an incredibly quick read. You’ll be
amazed! We have 12 copies in stock that can be
shipped in time for Christmas (in the U.S.). After
those are gone we’ll have to wait for more from the
printer. If you order soon enough, you might even
have enough time to read it for yourself before you
wrap it.
Enjoy your holidays!
