I was
really glad to read this….
This is a great time
of year in the baseball world. No, not as good as
summer baseball. Not nearly as fun as the playoffs.
I’d even say spring training is more exciting.
But this time of year
baseball is busy with free agent signings,
arbitration, trades and deadlines.
This morning, I was
really glad to hear the Mariners kept Jamie Moyer.
Not that I am a raving Mariner fan. Yes, I have been
a fan since moving to the Great Northwest, but my
allegiances are still with my childhood team, the
Angels.
What I am most
impressed with in this transaction is Jamie’s
motivation to keep competing. He is now 43 years old
and coming back for his 11th season with the
Mariners.
That’s right, he’s 43
years old. An old man by baseball standards ( I hate
to admit that, he’s about my age).
What really hit home
to me in this article was not the $5.5 million base
salary he will make, not the additional $1 million
in possible incentives, but the fact that he is
happy the transaction is finished.
Jamie said, “I feel
good-I’m happy it’s done and over with. I can
continue my workouts…” according to the Seattle
Times article.
He also said, “I
would have played somewhere this year. I haven’t
been working out the last two months to retire.”
Take that as advice
to all of you who play or coach.
If you are not
training hard for the upcoming season, you had
better get on your horse and start doing it. Jamie
has been at it for two months already. He still has
about 3 months before he has to report to camp.
Moyer is not playing
into his mid 40’s because he is not a hard thrower
like some folks think. His pitching effort is just
as hard as Randy Johnson’s.. It may not come out has
hard. However, his body is working just as hard.
What has made him the
pitcher he is today is his work ethic off the field.

This weekend, Sean
