Have
Less Fear With Your Curve Ball
Or Slider While Pitching!
I received a great
email from a BioForce Faithful recently. From one of
our friends down under. Yes, they do play baseball
in Australia. Not just cricket.
And yes, our mate
from Australia’s name is Les Fear…gotta love that
for an athlete!

as a pitcher and boy do I love to pitch but
there is one thing billy that I cant do is get a
really quick break on my curve & sliders pitch
can you help me. Kind Regards Les Fear
Gday
Les!,
Many factors go into
a late breaking curve or slider. Probably a lot more
than I can get into with a short tip like this, but
I’ll try to cover the hot spots.
One is speed. The
harder you throw it, the better chance it will break
late. Even if you don’t throw 90 mph you can have a
later breaking pitch.
I see a lot of young
baseball pitchers try and make the ball curve with
their body or changing their arm slot, or their arm
speed….not a good thing.
The curve starts with
solid firm grip. Make sure you split the ball in
half with your thumb and middle finger. Too much of
the ball showing above the thumb and middle finger,
like a snow cone, will make the curve ball hump a
little and not be sharp.
Next, throw it hard.
Accelerate into release point. Many pitchers slow
down going into release point. You want the ball to
look like a fastball coming out of your hand. So
throw it like one.
Don’t change your arm
slot of posture for the curve. Probably the biggest
problem I see is a change in posture. I believe this
is why the curve has gotten such a bad rap with arm
problems. It’s not the curve that does the harm,
it’s the changing of mechanics that will hurt you.
So, split the ball in
half with your grip, grip it firm, and throw it
hard. Of course, your mechanics have something to do
with release point and an effective curve. Can’t get
into those right now, but check out our
How to Become a More Explosive, Athletic. and
Powerful Pitcher DVD. It’ll go over those proper
mechanics.
