How Often Should I Do My Pitching Drills?

Max, I'm very glad to hear that you have watched the DVDs and they are working the program. My goal is to get a companion manual published this summer to help plan the workouts, both in-season and off-season. This email should help give you some insight on how to use the program in-season.

In-season, it is time to maintain what we have gained over the off-season in both strength and mechanics. The goal is to stay sharp and enhance your timing mechanism (a great drill for timing is pitching drill 3 in the DVD.)

How much effort should I put out every pitch?

Some folks say 80%, others 95%.

The correct answer is....there is no set answer.

The idea of pitching is to throw the ball as hard as you can while throwing the ball where you want it to go.

If I feel great today, very strong and can throw at 97% of my max velocity and throw to my spot, then that's where I should be.

My next outing I might not feel well and can't put out max effort, but I still need to compete.

Some of the best games I threw when I was in youth baseball and high school is when I wasn't feeling well. My velocity might not have been there, but I backed off enough and had great control.

The object is to get stronger, with purposeful strength, to support your explosive delivery.

Learn what your max velocity is and train yourself to see where your breaking point is. Constantly try to improve your benchmarks.

Endurance is also the key. It's one thing to throw 90 miles per hour in the first inning but only throw 80 in the 6th.

Slowly build up your endurance to maintain peak performance.

Keep workin hard!
