Have an
approach, at bat or on the mound.
All hitters and
pitchers should have an approach.
What do I mean by
that?
Well, let's look at
the off-speed pitch. What is the purpose of a
change-up?
Is it to strike the
batter out or make them put the ball in play for a
desired result?
We teach our pitchers
at our academy to have a purpose for every pitch.
The change-up is a pitch to disrupt the timing of
the hitter. It's a great pitch in a fastball count.
The hitter is gearing up for the pitcher's best
fastball. The desired result? A ground ball to the
middle infielder for a double play, a pop-up or
maybe a fly ball.
What approach should
the hitter take? Well, look for patterns from the
pitcher and also assess the situation. Does your
team need you to score the runner from third with
less than two outs?
This "approach -
hitting" will be covered extensively in our new
Approach Hitting class starting next Sunday. If you

We have limited
