How Often Should I Do My Pitching Drills?

Max, I'm very glad to hear that you have watched the DVDs and they are working the program. My goal is to get a companion manual published this summer to help plan the workouts, both in-season and off-season. This email should help give you some insight on how to use the program in-season.

In-season, it is time to maintain what we have gained over the off-season in both strength and mechanics. The goal is to stay sharp and enhance your timing mechanism (a great drill for timing is pitching drill 3 in the DVD.)

Are you getting enough recovery time?

Did you notice I didn't say rest?

As a pitcher, are you getting enough recovery time between starts or games?

If you are one of the studs of the team, my guess is no. I was talking with one of our students today and he threw 99 pitches in a game last night. The coach has him throwing every 4th day....three days rest.

This pitcher is a big strong athlete and that is what the coach probably sees. But he is just a susceptible to over-use injury as the next guy. Even the professional pitchers are starting every 5th game. Four to 5 days rest.

Who is in charge of the workload of the pitcher?

Certainly the coach should be, but you, the pitcher is ultimately repsponsible for you career. Listen to your body and make sure you are getting enough recovery time between starts....for the health of your arm.

The pitcher I'm talking about came into the academy today and did a good hard workout. He worked speed and agility, flexibility, some balance and stability work, some arm and shoulder endurance work as well as some explosive core work with medicine balls.

Oh yeah, he also spent 25 minutes on the eliptical to help flush out his system. If you're in the area and want to know more how to improve your recovery time, check out our summer baseball classes.

If you're out of the area, look for our upcoming books and videos. I wish I could get them out faster, believe me. I know there are a lot of folks looking for great information. We'll be announcing our release of our first video within a fews days.

Look in your email box or visit the site often.

Thanks,
