How do I
Develop more Throwing Velocity?
I wish I had a dime
for every time I was asked that question. I'll make
it simple.
Get stronger!
Strength is speed. I'm not talking absolute, beach
muscle, football and body-building type strength.
I'm talking about strength with a purpose. We call
it functional strength. How do you get it?
Well, not with
lifting huge weight after huge weight. It's using
balance, stability, bands, medicine balls, explosive
training and body work. I recently saw a rec high
school basketball game. The starting 5 are athletes
from the baseball team, two from the soccer team,
one tennis player and a Lacrosse player. The other
five are from the football team. The starting five
guys ran the court with fluidity and grace. The
football players looked like a bunch of tree stumps.
They had no flexibility or grace. Sure on the
football field, they probably get the job done, but
not in a finess game.
Get stronger with
better flexibility and more explosiveness.
Is this the only
factor in velocity? No. More on the mechanical side
of throwing the ball harder later.
