Tip of the Week

How Often Should I Do My Pitching Drills?

Max, I'm very glad to hear that you have watched the DVDs and they are working the program. My goal is to get a companion manual published this summer to help plan the workouts, both in-season and off-season. This email should help give you some insight on how to use the program in-season.

In-season, it is time to maintain what we have gained over the off-season in both strength and mechanics. The goal is to stay sharp and enhance your timing mechanism (a great drill for timing is pitching drill 3 in the DVD.)

BioForce Pitching Mechanics are Above the Law

Last week’s trivia question seemed to be easier than I thought. I certainly got a lot more emails on this one than the last…

Last week’s baseball trivia question answer is Gaylord Perry. He was the first pitcher to win the award in each league.

I got an email from a self-proclaimed BioForce Faithful fan a few days ago that I thought would be a great subject for a tip. His name is Adam, and if I told you where he is from, he’d probably have to arrest you (I thought about saying he’d have to shoot you, but that might be in poor taste considering Adam is in law enforcement).

It’s great. I get emails from all over the world and from people of all occupations. Law enforcement officers, military personnel, doctors, lawyers, coaches, you name it, I’ve probably had it. So, keep the questions coming and it would be fun to let me know what you do for a living if you are the parent of a ball player.

Here’s a copy of the email I received from Adam…

"Bill, could you forward any throwing drills that focus on staying on top and behind the baseball.  Second, drills for throwing across the body.  Sorry I haven’t returned any emails as of late, work in law enforcement has been crazy this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I’’m still a BioForce fan and wear my hat everywhere………….TKS"
                                                             ~ Adam

Adam,

Thanks for the great questions. First off, I take it your son, or whomever you are coaching, is having trouble with the rotation of his pitches. When folks ask me about staying behind the baseball, the concern seems to be that they are getting a funky, or different spin to the fastball.

I like to look at the cause of the funky, or sudden change in rotation. All too often coaches focus on the symptom, and not the disease of the problem. Adam, I would focus on the pitcher’s front side. If his timing is off, then the arm will have to compensate. Rule of thumb, if you see a problem with the arm, fix the front side. How?

I believe you have our More Athletic and Explosive Pitcher DVD. I would use the arm swing drill and focus on the timing of foot strike and his glove side timing. With that said, some kids get a natural funky rotation to the pitch. That’s ok. It usually creates some natural movement to his ball. Look at Mariano Rivera of the Yankees. I believe he gets a natural cut to his fastball.

Secondly, you asked about throwing across his body. Again, what is the cause of the problem? Start with his feet and stance. A change there can create all sorts of problems. Is his weight evenly distributed or has he started putting his weight more on his toes in his stretch position. This will encourage his momentum to get off line. Is he changing his posture early in the delivery?

If there has been no change, I would work on playing catch along a line like a foul line. Have him do step behind throws at a short distance and then stretch it out a little. Make sure his momentum is going down the line…or at least close to down the line and work on it being consistent. A little “crossing over” is ok. Excessive amounts can cause problems. The consistency of getting his body going where he wants it to go should help him understanding where his body is going while on the mound.

Adam, I hope this helps. I certainly appreciate your sacrifices for our safety and the job you do in law enforcement. Let me know when you wear out your BioForce hat and we’ll send one of our finest another.

I bet you never lose any arguments with an umpire. Just a little flash of the badge and the handcuffs probably get the job done, huh?

Good luck Adam, and let me know if these ideas help.

How about the baseball trivia question for the week…

Who is the Major League Pitcher that had the most wins in the 1990’s…and as a bonus, how many wins did he have during the decade?

I hope this one’s a little tougher for you.

Until next time,

Keep training like a champion today!
