How Often Should I Do My Pitching Drills?

Max, I'm very glad to hear that you have watched the DVDs and they are working the program. My goal is to get a companion manual published this summer to help plan the workouts, both in-season and off-season. This email should help give you some insight on how to use the program in-season.

In-season, it is time to maintain what we have gained over the off-season in both strength and mechanics. The goal is to stay sharp and enhance your timing mechanism (a great drill for timing is pitching drill 3 in the DVD.)

Baseball, Apple Pie, and Now…. All You Can Eat Hot Dogs at a Game!

Ahhh, America’s pastime….a baseball game, hot dogs, peanuts, and soda.

Now you’ll be able to eat all you want when you buy a $40 bleacher seat at the Dodger game this year.

Did you read about this? When you buy a $35 ticket ($40 on game day) for the right-field pavilion at Dodger Stadium, you’ll be able to pig out and eat all the hot dogs, peanuts and drink as much soda as you want during the game.

My first reaction was negative at first. But then I thought, you know, might be easier to bring the kids to the ball park and not worry about dropping a few hundred bucks to watch a game. As long as your kids like hot dogs and peanuts.

On to the tip of the day though.

I’ve had a few folks ask about simple drills to be included in my emails from time to time.

So here’s one.

This week at our academy, we are working on control. In pitching, it’s control of the pitch. For our hitting, we are working on bat control and situational hitting.

A couple of drills to help you with your throwing or pitching is a simple game of pig.

Yes the P.I.G. game we play in basketball.

What a great drill for pitching. We can learn a lot about ourselves in this game. You choose a pitch, a delivery, and a spot to hit and then put the pressure on your opponent and hit it. He misses and get’s a P. Simple as that.

Not so creative you say?

Well, it is if you really think about it and what learning and challenges are going on during the game. If you are going on the attack, you need to be creative, look for an opportunity, visualize what you want to achieve, and execute the pitch.

If you are on the defensive end, you need to be challenged both physically and mentally. Mentally, you need to duplicate the pitch, even if it isn’t your strength. Physically, you need to overcome the pressure, which builds throughout the game.

What a great way to test your pitches under pressure.

Next time, we will talk about a situational hitting drill that works bat control.

One more thought on the all-you-can-eat bleacher seats. Good thing the Dodgers are having those seats in the bleachers. With all that eating going on, folks will grow out of the traditional seating with the arms and such. Bleacher seating can expand with the customer.

I hope they reinforce the bleachers so all the added weight won’t bring the structure down!

Keep training like a champion today!
