How Often Should I Do My Pitching Drills?

Max, I'm very glad to hear that you have watched the DVDs and they are working the program. My goal is to get a companion manual published this summer to help plan the workouts, both in-season and off-season. This email should help give you some insight on how to use the program in-season.

In-season, it is time to maintain what we have gained over the off-season in both strength and mechanics. The goal is to stay sharp and enhance your timing mechanism (a great drill for timing is pitching drill 3 in the DVD.)

"Bill Mooney's BioForce Baseball Boot Camp was just what my son needed to move up in his team and help them have the winningest season ever."

Elite Pitching Program

Since we’ve opened BioForce Baseball Academy late in 2003, the demand in our Elite Pitching Program has continued to rapidly increase. It has increased to the point where we will be taking referrals only coming in spring 2005. By limiting the number of students in the program, we will be able to keep the quality of instruction at the highest level possible.

Because of the success of our athletes and the demand for the program we have a narrow profile of athletes that we would like to participate in our Elite Program.

We will be taking on special athletes only for the Elite Pitching program. What does special mean? To us at the academy, special is a unique combination of the following things:

Ability - He must have a solid overall athletic ability.

Aptitude - He must have a passion and love of pitching and baseball.

Attitude - He must be eager to learn, listen, experiment and open-minded.

Work Ethic/Dedication - He must habitually do his homework.

Commitment - He must be persistent and resilient to temporary failure, frustrations, setbacks and challenges.

Goals - He must have a burning desire and passion to play beyond his current level of play.

Parents who are supportive and not intrusive - The athlete’s parents must be helpful but not be attempting to live through their child. The parents should also not attempt to save their child from failure by manipulation, coercion or influence. They must view their child as a capable, responsible, honorable young person who is ultimately accountable for his own failures and successes.

If you noticed, I have left off several traits or assets that some people consider to be important, special, or “Elite”. Traits or assets such as velocity, great control, a nasty breaking pitch, a great change-up, was an all-star for 3 consecutive years, father was an all-state player, threw 5 no-hitters last year, age, everyone says he’s great, strikes out more than anyone in his league…you can fill in the blanks.

I don’t think these are the traits, assets or results that make up an “Elite” pitcher. They don’t make the young athlete special. If your pitcher is the next Mark Prior or Nolan Ryan but is closed-minded or difficult to coach, then he doesn’t belong in our program. If your pitcher is a wonderful young man, but his passion is luke warm, then the Elite Pitcher’s Program is not for him.

Special, to me, means he has a burning desire to pitch and is exceptionally eager to find out how to improve his skills.

Does this describe your athlete?

The athlete’s dream is to play high school, college and/or professional baseball.

He loves to pitch more than almost anything.

He would mark down the date of the next training session and couldn’t wait for the days to go by.

He would be sitting in the driveway, ready to go as you drive up.

He has been in search of a competent, high quality professional mentor to take him under his wing and help him reach his goals.

If so, you are the type of athlete and family that makes up the BioForce family.

Commonly asked questions about the Elite Program

1) How often should I come to train at BioForce?

Our most popular option is the twice-per-week plan. This enables the athlete to be introduced to the concept the first time and then work to master the discipline the next visit. Of course, it is your choice. Come once per week, twice per week or unlimited. The most dedicated athletes train 3 to 4 days per week and continue for many months out of the year. Our athletes that achieve the highest levels of success train most of the year in some aspect or another. Remember, we are a results-oriented academy.

2) Do I just start showing up for the class?

Most of our new clients come from referrals or are current students who have been working with me or one of our instructors already. If you are new to the program we have the athlete complete our Elite Pitching Jump Start Package.

3) How long are the classes?

The Elite Pitching program class is a comprehensive 1-½ hour training session. The classes typically operate 4 to 5 days per week, depending on the time of the year. We build in maximum flexibility for your busy schedule. No need to make an appointment. Just show up when it fits your schedule. Within that 1-½ hours, we spend the first 5 to 15 minutes with the lecture portion discussing the topic of the week and our Life Skills curriculum. The next 25 to 35 minutes focuses on our warm-up, flexibility, core strengthening, arm and shoulder care, endurance, balance, stability and baseball specific explosive athleticism. The last half of the class is dedicated to the specific skill work based on our proprietary curriculum.

4) What are the qualifications of Coach Mooney and the BioForce Baseball Academy?

I hold two certifications from world-renowned performance expert, Dr. Tom House. He is a former professional pitcher, former major league pitching coach and mentor to many elite major league pitchers including Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson and Mark Prior. The first award I earned from Tom was the Functional Fitness Certification. The second is the Advanced Pitching Techniques Certification.

Here’s what my mentor has to say about my education and teaching skills..

“Bill Mooney is one of few pitching coaches in the nation who has been Certified by The National Pitching Association and Functional Fitness, Inc. I have found that Bill is one of the finest young pitching coaches in the country today. His knowledge and instruction are the most up-to-date and progressive you’ll find. With his knowledge, teaching skills and background Bill does an outstanding job helping pitchers perform at their peak and remain healthy.”

Performance expert. Former Major League Pitcher. Former Major League pitching coach. Current coach and mentor to many star major league pitchers. Co-founder of the National Pitching Association.

Once you become a BioForce Family member, you are always a family member. The Staff and I are very committed to our students focusing on their improvements and results. That is why we track each and every student’s progress, share that information with the student and help them develop long- term goals.

The BioForce Baseball Academy Mission Statement:

“Our goal at BioForce is to assist all of our dedicated athletes to perform at their own personal peak, to stay as healthy as possible, to help them extend their career as long as they choose, enjoy the whole baseball experience, and apply what they’ve learned here at BioForce to other aspects of their lives.”

Our teaching style is more as a facilitator, not a lecturer or someone who imputes his infinite wisdom. We focus on the three ways people learn: hear, see and feel. Together with the athlete, we will discover his best learning style or styles. We do not scold, punish or admonish our students. It should not be necessary.

BioForce family members/students are motivated and self-driven athletes. We are here to assist them in their training. We guide them, ask many questions and encourage them to be their own best pitching coach. I view each athlete as a valuable, talented, competent, worthwhile young man who will be responsible and accountable for his own performance, behavior and results. If there is a problem or difficulty, we expect the student to immediately bring it up to me or one of the staff’s attention to be resolved immediately.

This program requires a very good amount of physical exertion. The athlete works to the level of his own tolerance keeping in mind that the intensity level of the workout is a direct correlation to the results achieved. If the student can not complete a drill or exercise, does not feel well physically or is injured, the athlete must alert me or the staff immediately and discontinue the activity. We do not want injuries. Communication from the athlete to the instructors is critical. We all need to recognize that the athlete must be in good health before starting this elite training program.
